Health Insurance for the Poor: India

Abstract: A search for alternative mechanisms for meeting the healthcare needs of the poor in India has given rise to a variety of new health insurance initiatives. This paper describes three such initiatives, namely micro-health insurance, the Yeshasvini scheme in Karnataka state, and the national Universal Health Insurance scheme. Each has the overriding objective of increasing the access of poor individuals and families to quality healthcare at an affordable cost.
